NDP calls for increased support for electric vehicle production 

NDP Innovation, International Trade and automotive critic, Brian Masse, made the following statement: 

“New Democrats welcome today’s announcement of much-needed investment in electric vehicle production in Windsor and Brampton. This investment demonstrates that Canada’s auto manufacturing workforce and industry continue to have world-class potential and productivity.

Today’s announcement would not have happened without the tireless advocacy of Unifor and the labor movement to push the federal government, through multiple contract negotiations, into building the vehicles of the future, and growing the domestic electric vehicle supply chain while creating good union jobs.

Under the Liberal government, Canada is lagging behind many other countries in electric vehicle production. This investment needs to be the start of a continued commitment to support the industry, not a one-off. Canada has one of the best workforces in the world, and we need to be leaders in the production of electric vehicles to create good, sustainable jobs and to reach our climate goals.

New Democrats will continue to urge the federal government to invest in electric vehicle production and to create a national strategy for the Canadian auto industry.”
