MASSE REQUESTS WORKING GROUP TO ENSURE CANADIAN FIRMS BENEFIT FROM FCA INVESTMENT: All stakeholders from government, business & labour are needed
Ottawa-Today, Brian Masse MP (Windsor West), NDP Industry and Automotive Critic, requested the establishment of a working group that includes all stakeholders from government, business, and labour to ensure there was a specific strategy to ensure Canadian suppliers benefited from the Fiat Chrysler’s $4.5 Billion investment in Michigan.
Masse wrote in a letter to the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development, “Many parts suppliers, tool, die and mould makers, equipment vendors, software producers and logistics providers in Canada need to participate in this significant development. These companies are the essential backbone of the Canadian automotive supply chain and ensure our competitive standing in the sector.
As is commonly understood in the industry, being within a 90 kilometre radius of an original equipment manufacturer places a firm in the required range of the supply chain. Therefore, firms from Windsor through southern Ontario are high priority in becoming primary suppliers.
I am specifically asking you today for a robust specific strategy for this “once in a generation” opportunity for our domestic industry. Additionally, the establishment of a working group with all the relevant stakeholders from government, industry and workers needs to be instituted to guarantee all concerns and issues are addressed.
I look forward to the government’s response to assist Canadian companies and workers in this endeavour.”
