MASSE RECEIVES WATER WARRIOR AWARD FOR GREAT LAKES WORK

(OTTAWA) – Today, Brian Masse’s MP (Windsor West), will receive the inaugural Water Warrior award from behalf of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Pollution Probe, the Council of the Great Lakes Region, the International Joint Commission, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, the Ontario Commercial Fisheries’ Association, the Invasive Species Centre, and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters for his work to protect the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence river, and other freshwater resources.

The award, an engraved wooden porringer, is an ancient style of shallow bowl that has been a staple on the tables of working families as far back as the Middle Ages. It gained prominence in the fields and forests of North America in the 17th and 18th centuries due to its simplicity and functionality. In this inaugural year there are 23 recipients, including 8 Members of Parliament and Senators, fighting to make freshwater a national priority.

“The Great Lakes are a global treasure unique in the world. It is essential that Canada take a leadership role in protecting and restoring this resource that tens of millions of people and ecosystems depend on. Over the more than 20 years I have been in parliament, this has been one of my priorities. The award represents the hard work of thousands of residents of the Great Lakes region that I have been able to champion and advocate for in the House of Commons to many different governments and in Washington as well to many administrations.” stated Masse.
