MASSE & NDP CONTINUES TO CALL, ALONG WITH MUNICIPAL LEADERS AND UNIFOR, FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO LIVE UP TO COMMITMENTS MADE FOR WINDSOR’S STELLANTIS-LG EV BATTERY PLANT

NDP leader questioned the government in the House of Commons to fulfill the funding for electric vehicle battery plant

(OTTAWA) – Today, Brian Masse’s MP (Windsor West), demanded that the federal liberals live up the funding commitments agreed to for the proposed Stellantis-LG’s Electric Vehicle Battery Plant in Windsor which is presently under construction until it was halted more than two weeks ago in a dispute between the companies the federal government. The Mayor of Windsor, City Council, Unifor Local 444, the Chambre of Commerce, and many local stakeholders held a press conference to reinforce the same demand.

“This situation is the result of the federal liberal government’s inaction to live up to commitments made more than a year ago. It is political malpractice to put at risk the investment, jobs, and the resources of the local municipality and the bargaining efforts of workers and Unifor to help secure this plant from Stellantis-LG. As the only party fighting for this investment, as demonstrated by our leader’s question in the House of Commons today to the government on the battery plant over the heckling and derision from the Conservative caucus.” stated Masse.

Today in Question Period in the House of Commons Jagmeet Singh stated, “This weekend the negotiations with Stellantis to resume the production of the EV battery factory in Windsor are not going well. I don’t why the Conservatives are moaning about this.  This is very serious. There are 2500 jobs at stake and its the future of the automotive sector in the country. Will this government ensure that these jobs don’t end up going to the US and instead keep these jobs in Canada and do everything possible to make sure this deal goes forward. While the Conservatives want this deal to not go forward, we want it to go forward….the government needs to back up words with action and protect the factory.”
