Hansard

May 20, 2022

The Speaker: — for Windsor west.

Brian Masse (NDP): Madam Speaker, the delay of Huawei compromised our intelligence sharing and allies and competitiveness. Canadians deserve a real answer about why their natural security and privacy was put at risk. It took three years to announce a ban and Huawei is still operating in Canada. The government wasted precious time and now they ask us to wait longer for legislation that will protect Canadians and close this embarrassing chapter for our country. Why is this government failing to prioritize the national security and privacy of Canadians?

The Speaker: [Speaking French]

François-Philippe Champagne (LPC): I’d like to thank the member for the question and giving me the opportunity to come back to the announcement we did yesterday. Madam Speaker, this is never been about a race. This is about natural security. What we’ve announced yesterday our intention in order to exclude equipment and services from Huawei [indiscernible] 5G telecommunication network in Canada. This is in the best interests of Canadians. This is protecting our national security. And will this will ensure the resilience of our telecom sector for generations to come.
